Umm no.
I'm a pleaser by nature. I dislike confrontation, and I hate letting people down. I'm usually the one who is bending over backwards to make everyone happy. And do you know what that usually results in?
Very early into our engagement, we hit this issue. One of the first decisions that we needed to make was where we would actually be married. Church or no church? JP or minister? While neither Keith nor I are particularly religious right now, we were both raised with very different religious backgrounds. A few months before we got engaged, I went through the process of being confirmed in the Catholic faith, so it made sense that we would have a Catholic ceremony. Choosing a Catholic ceremony would make his family and my grandparents happy, but would not make my parents so. My parents were so adamant against it, that they said they would not attend if we were married in a church.
We ultimately ended up deciding that we were going to do the ceremony exactly the way that we wanted to, and that if anyone had a problem with it, well, then that was their problem!
After meeting with a Deacon at our local parish, the choice was an easy one to make. We were reminded that our marriage is about the two of us, and making each other happy. In the craziness of planning a wedding, it can be easy to lose sight of what our wedding is all about.
Did anyone else face the problem of pleasing other people over yourself? How did you work it out?
